SOCIAL PROBLEM MAYA CARE FOUNDATION IS ADDRESSING
Over 6.9 million senior citizens in India experience ill-treatment (including both physical and emotional abuse), are left alone and have no one to care for. Social stigma and the fear of losing often make them reluctant to complain or seek outside intervention.
Most senior citizens who live alone suffer due to a lack of companionship â sometimes exacerbated by a lack of mobility due to ill health. Over two-thirds of senior citizens in India suffer from chronic disease. Health conditions are dominated by cardiovascular diseases and hypertension.
There are about 28 million disabled people in India and less than 25% of disabled people are employed. Over 50% of the disabled population of India is employable.
Most employers believe that persons with disabilities cannot effectively perform the required job tasks.
