The problem Mendonsa Foundation is addressing
Cleft lip and palate malformations have a global occurrence of up to 1 in 500 live births worldwide and in India, an estimated one in every 800 children in are born with cleft lip or palate.

As per NDTV report, India has over 72,000 with cleft lip and palate. Infants born with cleft lips and palate malformation in low and middle-income families face significant barriers to treatment, leading to prolonged disfigurement, social stigma, speech impairment as well as trouble of feeding food that can result in malnutrition and death.

However, poor states in India, with less health care infrastructure were found to have with exceptionally high rates for the surgery. India witnesses approximately 25000 to 35000 cases of cleft lip and palate malformation in India each year.

A cleft of the lip or palate happens when a baby is born with an opening in the upper lip or the roof of the mouth (the palate).
