The problem Making The Difference is addressing
As part of religious celebrations tonnes of flowers are left at temples every day. For hundreds of years the only method of disposing of these symbols of devotion has been to throw them into sacred bodies of water like the Ganges. An estimated 8 million tonnes from somewhere in the region of 600,000 places of worship are now dumped in this way every year.

It may be surprising for you that 12% to 15% of water pollution is caused by garlands, flowers offered at religious places. Many of these mass-grown roses, lilies, and marigolds are covered with pesticides that leach into the river.

The flowers are covered with toxic pesticides and insecticides and get washed away into the water, bruising the fragile ecosphere. Organic matter from the decomposing floral waste leads to the growth of algae, which depletes oxygen levels in the water and threatens aquatic life.
