Close to 60% of menstruating girls from rural areas drop out of school due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products.
Spending even a single rupee for their hygiene products would mean them sleeping hungry for a few days as their parents have a very low-income.
More than 90% of menstruating girls do not know how to maintain hygiene during and after menstruation. Menstruation is normal and a healthy part of life and yet females in rural India go through extreme struggles to manage their periods every month. A large chunk of the Indian population believes this natural cycle to be a âcurseâ, âimpureâ, and âdirtyâ among other things.
It is due to this ignorance that most females resort to unhygienic and harmful things like rags, cloths, mud, ashes, cow dung, etc. Such practices have proven to be extremely harmful to females being the leading cause of major health issues like cervical cancer, toxic shock syndrome, and more.
