Social problem TERRE Policy Centre is addressing
India’s ecological systems are under severe pressure, threatening both nature and vulnerable communities. Nearly 30% of the country’s land is degraded, while its extensive coastline faces rising sea levels, erosion, disappearing mangroves, and increasing climate risks.
Smallholder farmers, women, tribal families, and fishing communities depend on soil, forests, water, and oceans for food, fuel, and income. Erratic monsoons, declining soil fertility, falling water tables, reduced agricultural yields, and diminishing fish catches are deepening poverty and encouraging youth migration.
Deforestation, biodiversity loss, weakened coastal protection, and limited environmental awareness are accelerating these challenges.
Without urgent, community-led action, vital carbon sinks may disappear, livelihoods may collapse, and climate inequality will intensify across vulnerable regions.
