53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate. More than 50 per cent of girls fail to enrol in school every year; those that do are likely to drop out by the age of 12. 50% of Indian children aged 6-18 do not go to school.

17 million children in India work as per official estimates. Many children are forced to work at early age or lend their hand at home or are married at the early age. Many children are employed as domestic workers, lot of girls are engaged in agricultural activity.

Millions of children work to help their families because the adults do not have appropriate employment and income. Children also work because there is demand for cheap labour. Large numbers of children work simply because there is no alternative - since, they do not have access to good quality schools.

The village Habigoan Village at Khetri (Assam) is a remotely located and does not have basic amenities to lead a steady life including educational opportunities for children and youth.
