In India, particularly in Chennai and Tamil Nadu, children with special needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disabilities, face significant barriers to education and vocational opportunities.
With approximately 2.68 crore people living with disabilities nationwide, the demand for support services far exceeds supply. Fewer than 15% of children with special needs in Chennai receive structured education or training, and 80% drop out of school before Class 10.
Limited government funding, social stigma, and a shortage of trained special educators exacerbate the issue, leaving families struggling to access essential services and support for their children's development and future independence.
