In Solapur District, Maharashtra, children with special needs, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and their families face significant challenges due to lack of inclusive infrastructure, support systems, and community-based residential and therapeutic environments.
Approximately 4,000-5,000 special needs children in the district are without support, with over 90% of rural families lacking access to local therapeutic facilities. The problem is multifaceted, including lack of physical infrastructure, transportation, engaging activities, and residential support, leading to parent isolation and burnout.
Statistics highlight the severity: 87% of Indian families with autistic children lack nearby therapy centers, and 70% of caregivers experience burnout.
This issue has persisted for over two decades, exacerbated by urban-focused government support and NGO work, social stigma, and limited funding, leaving rural families unsupported and struggling to access quality services.
