The Social problem :

Tribal communities in six villages of Basia block, Gumla, face persistent poverty, food insecurity, limited services, and scarce livelihood opportunities. Agriculture is mainly rain-fed, subsistence-based, and restricted to one annual crop because irrigation, improved seeds, tools, and market access are inadequate. Low productivity and seasonal employment force young people into unsafe migration, exposing them to exploitation and disrupting families. Remote villages have weak educational infrastructure, high dropout rates, gender disparities, and limited opportunities for skills development. The regions history of Maoist-related insecurity has further delayed infrastructure and economic progress. Dependence on forest produce and wage labour leaves vulnerable households exposed to malnutrition, seasonal shocks, debt, and continuing intergenerational poverty.

The Social solution:

The project will strengthen livelihoods and food security across six villages through climate-resilient agriculture, livestock development, renewable irrigation, and collective marketing. Six hundred and fifty farmers will receive training in multi-crop cultivation, trellising, water conservation, drip irrigation, seed management, and vermicomposting. Solar-powered pumps, community seed banks, and farm implements banks will improve productivity while reducing drudgery and ensuring affordable shared access. Livestock support, improved breeds, poultry, scientific rearing, and barefoot veterinary services will diversify household incomes and reduce animal mortality. A three-wheeler cargo vehicle will connect producers with larger markets. Training, farmer and livestock clubs, institutional partnerships, and participatory monitoring will promote ownership, sustainability, nutrition, and reduced migration.
